If an expectorant is needed, there are many other herbs that are just as good as coltsfoot (mullein, wild thyme, pine oil) so that it makes little sense to risk liver damage, and possibly even cancer. Some of the components of Petasites species may turn out to be medically useful, but only when they can be separated and sold separately from the PAs.
General Herb Information
Coltsfoot - Son Before Father (Tussi lago farfara).
Propagation: By seed, by cuttings of underground running roots.
Nature of Plant: Flat orange flower heads appear in early spring before any of the leaves, leaves have a thin, waxy transparent covering membrane, spreading habits of plant make it a popular ground cover for waste spaces.
Spacing of Mature Plants: 6 or 8 inches apart but will wander about.
Cultural Requirements: Grows under almost any conditions, prefers full sun.
Uses
Leaf and Flower: (Medicinal) Cough medicine, smoked with other herbs for asthma, poultices, in sweet, glutinous infusion for bronchial catarrh; made into "coltsfoot rock," fluted light brown candy sticks flavored with oil of anise or of dill; dried leaves as tobacco substitute, main part of plant used is the leaf but flowers sometimes are added.
