Description: Lady's bedstraw is a wiry perennial herb of up to 0.5 m in height, with slender, angled stems and narrowly linear leaves arranged in whorls along the branches. The inconspicuous flowers are golden yellow in colour. Several other Galium species (and the closely related Rubia) are used as medicinal plants in various parts of the world, including North Africa, southern Africa and Asia. The best-known ones in Europe are G. aparine, known as dyers, or sticky willy and G. odoratum, known as sweet woodruff. Both these species differ from G. verum in their white flowers. Sticky willy is a creeping and climbing weedy herb with hooked prickles on the leaves and fruits that make them stick to clothing (the model for Velcro fastener).
Origin: Europe, North Africa and Asia (G. verarn, G. aparine and G. odoratum). The plants are wild-harvested.
Parts Used: Dried aboveground parts (Galii lutei herba; Galii aparinis herba; Galii odorati herba), collected while flowering.
Therapeutic Category: Diuretic (G. verum) or diuretic and astringent (G. aparine).
Uses and Properties:Galium species are mainly used as diuretics to treat minor complaints of the urinary tract, and in the case of G. aparine, enlarged lymph nodes. Externally, both G. verum and G. aparine are used to treat slow healing wounds, psoriasis and other skin ailments. Numerous traditional uses have been recorded for G. odorata, ranging from diseases of the respiratory tract, minor disorders of the gastrointestinal tract to sleep disorders and wound treatment.
Active Ingredients:Galium species contain tannins, phenolic acids, flavonoids and iridoid glycosides. The main iridoid glycosides are asperuloside a monotropeine; coumarins occur in G. odoratum. Roots of Galium contain anthraquinones (alizarin, lucidin, rubiadin) and naphthoquinones.
Pharmacological Effects: The astringent effects are linked to the tannins; iridoid glycosides are anti-inflammatory, while the anthraquinones are laxative and diuretic. Sedative effects of G. odoratum are associated with its coumarin content. Detailed pharmacological studies do not exist for Galium extracts.

The essence of the current American rule on Traditional Uses is, as stated by FTC, "Claims based on historical or traditional use should be substantiated by confirming scientific evidence, or should be presented in such a way that consumers understand that the sole basis for the claim is a history of use of the product for a particular purpose."
