Known since the 17th century, angelica is the fleshy root of the wild celery plant - a biennial or perennial herb native to northern and eastern Europe and parts of Asia. Angelica root consists of the dried root and rhizome of A. archangelica L. The root and rhizome contain essential oil, coumarin, and coumarin derivatives.
Angelica root supports digestion and digestive secretory functions; maintains healthy levels of bile flow; helps to keep a normal appetite in check; and serves as a muscular tonic in the digestive tract.
Don't confuse the European variety of this root with Chinese Angelica, or Dong Quai. The Chinese version is recommended for menstrual support; a tonic for the circulatory system and blood composition; and a bodily aid for the management of blood pressure and sustaining general cardiac health.
