Description
Anise seed is a gray-brown oval seed from Pimpinella anisum, a plant in the parsley family. It is related to Caraway, Dill, Cumin, and Fennel. For centuries, anise has been used to flovor medicines, colognes, toothpastes, mouthwashes, and soaps. Its natural "candy licorice" flavor and aroma make it the perfect natural additive to sweet confectionary treats and liqueurs!
Anise seed assists the body in the maintenance of both the respiratory and digestive tracts providing a soothing, tonic effect. Additionally, anise may help to preserve normal, healthy levels of friendly bacteria in the colon facilitating better digestion, elimination, and general overall health.
The active constituents in anise, particularly the terpenoid anethole, are contained in its volatile oil. The volatile oil gives the plant a delightful flavor and has been combined with other less pleasant tasting herbs to offset their taste.
