Uva ursi leaves have an astringent taste and a slight aromatic smell. They break cleanly when bent. They contain gum, resin, gallic acid, ericolin and one glucoside, arbutin. Several doctors have recommended its use in diseases of the kidneys, bladder and urethra and as a strong stimulant producing uterine contractions. It seems harmful in cases of nephritis.
The bitter, astringent leaves of uva ursi, or bearberry, are known to benefit the kidneys, bladder, small intestines, heart, and liver. It is primarily the diuretic, urinary antiseptic, and astringent actions of the herb that have made it particularly useful in treating conditions such as cystitis and nephritis.
Used for urinary tract inflammations including cystitis, nephritis, urethritis and pyelitis. It is also useful for blood in the urine.
For cystitis and nephritis, combine one ounce uva ursi leaves with a quarter ounce each of marshmallow root and ginger root. Pour one pint of boiling water over the herbs and cover, letting it stand until it reaches room temperature. Take three cups daily.
