Description

Name

Apium graveolens L. (Umbelliferae), commonly called Wild Celery. In French, it is called Céleri Ache Odorante; in German, Sellerie.

Source

Dried ripe fruits of plants that are mainly cultivated in India and Eastern Europe.

History

Wild celery was popular with the Romans even though it has a rather bitter taste. Italian gardeners in the Middle Ages began to cultivate the variety that is eaten today. Traditional herbalists used it to treat gout and arthritic symptoms.

Traditional Claims

Diuretic, carminative, appetite stimulant, tonic and aphrodisiac.

Commission E Recommendations

Positive benefits are not clear, and because of the danger of photosensitization, this herb is not recommended by the Commission.

Proven Effects

The characteristic smell of celery is due to a chemical called 3-n-butyl phthalide. In laboratory studies, treatment with this compound, and with whole celery seed oil, prevents the growth of tumors in animals exposed to carcinogens. It is not known whether this benefit carries over to humans. The same compound is thought to account for celery's ability to calm the stomach. Diuretic effects are probably from mannitol, a sugar produced in the celery plant. In large doses, mannitol causes the kidneys to increase urine production. Clinical trials in humans are nonexistent.

Dosage

Bring to boil one teaspoon of seeds in 1/2 cup of water, let stand a few minutes, and then strain. Use up to three times a day.

Directions

Hot tea brewing method: Bring freshly drawn cold water to a rolling boil. Place 1 tea bag for each cup into the teapot. Pour the boiling water into the teapot. Cover and let steep for 3-7 minutes according to taste (the longer the steeping time the stronger the tea).

Iced tea brewing method (to make 1 liter/quart): Place 6 tea bags into a teapot or heat resistant pitcher. Pour 1 1/4 cups of freshly boiled water over the tea. Steep for 5 minutes. Quarter fill a serving pitcher with cold water. Pour the tea into your serving pitcher straining the bags. Add ice and top-up the pitcher with cold water. Garnish and sweeten to taste. [A rule of thumb when preparing fresh brewed iced tea is to double the strength of hot tea since it will be poured over ice and diluted with cold water].

Cautions

Concerns

If wild celery plants become infected with certain types of fungi, they begin to produce substances called psoralens (furanocoumarins). These chemicals absorb ultraviolet light. Field workers who handle the plants become extremely sensitive to light and can experience severe sunburns. The same phenomenon sometimes happens with parsley. In theory, psoralens could become incorporated in commercial products, though there are no reports of that occurring.

Warnings

Violent allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) have been reported. Similar violent reactions are possible with carrot and mugwort. As strange as it may seem, there is an association between sensitivity to different pollens and sensitivity to some edible vegetables. These seem to fall into groups. There is, for example, an association between ragweed pollen allergy and hypersensitivity to watermelon, melon, cucumber and banana. Individuals who are allergic to birch pollen may also be allergic to hazelnut, apple, carrot, potato, and kiwi. Individuals who are allergic to mugwort pollen may have violent allergic reactions to celery, carrot, spices, nuts, mustard and Leguminoseae vegetables. The explanation appears to be that the pollens and the vegetables contain molecules which closely resemble each other and which can trigger the same allergic reactions. Anyone who has had skin tests showing that they are allergic to mugwort should not be using celery root oil.

Drug Testing

None of the components of celery seeds should interfere with standard workplace urine drug screening tests.

Great celery seed tea.  Celery Seed Tea

Tea bags make a clean cup of tea. Does not get bitter if left steeping too long. Great with a little honey.

-- Tom (Profession: IT Professional)

Also Recommended: I purchased because of a high uric acid count and celery seed is supposed to be a good counter to this. I have grown to like this tea for itself and use it when I want something hot and without caffeine.

  Celery Seed Tea

I found the celery seed tea tasted better brewed and then chilled for ice tea. The taste was very refreshing and I didn't add anything to it. It definitely acts as a natural diretic which is what I was hoping to achieve.
