Description
Although primarily used for constipation, the bulky mass of psyllium can help to soothe diarrhoea and is sometimes recommended for irritable bowel syndrome. Since psyllium also creates a feeling of fullness, it is sometimes promoted as a slimming aid that discourages over-eating.
Black psyllium, or "flea seeds", (P psyllium) and pinkish-brown isphaghula (P ovata) are among the most popular of prescription and over-the-counter bulking laxatives. Both psyllium seeds and psyllium husks are available and both need to be soaked in water (1 teaspoon to a cup of boiling water) to produce a mucilaginous mixture which is then swallowed to encourage peristalsis and lubricate the bowel.
Many find this glutinous mixture rather hard to take. Psyllium capsules are simply swallowed with water so that the seeds swell and become mucilaginous in the stomach instead. Large amounts of water need to be taken with such capsules to prevent over-absorption of gut fluids by the seeds as they expand. Alternatively, psyllium seeds can be mixed with breakfast cereal or flavored with fruit juice.
Externally, psyllium seeds can be used in healing poultices for wounds and skin infections.

Directions
Hot tea brewing method: Bring freshly drawn cold water to a rolling boil. Place 1 tea bag for each cup into the teapot. Pour the boiling water into the teapot. Cover and let steep for 3-7 minutes according to taste (the longer the steeping time the stronger the tea).
Iced tea brewing method (to make 1 liter/quart): Place 6 tea bags into a teapot or heat resistant pitcher. Pour 1 1/4 cups of freshly boiled water over the tea. Steep for 5 minutes. Quarter fill a serving pitcher with cold water. Pour the tea into your serving pitcher straining the bags. Add ice and top-up the pitcher with cold water. Garnish and sweeten to taste. [A rule of thumb when preparing fresh brewed iced tea is to double the strength of hot tea since it will be poured over ice and diluted with cold water].
