Essiac original 4 herb formula "The consistency seems to be good and the directions are straight forward. Wish it came in the 2oz bags still." -- John
Rene Caisse was a Canadian nurse who made the Ojibwa Tea Formula world-famous. It has long been purported to be a supportive for many serious illnesses. It certainly is an effective immunity booster. Many companies sell versions of the original Ojibwa Formulas, including Essiac and Flor*Essence.
The TerraVita Ojibwa Original 4-Herb Formula is made of only the highest quality herbs with no added fillers, colors or sweeteners. Our blend is an exact replica of the original blend:
Burdock Root (Arctium Lappa) - 24 Parts Sheep's Sorrel (Rumex Acetosella) - 16 Parts Slippery Elm Bark (Ulmus Fulva) - 4 Parts Turkey Rhubarb (Rheum Palmatum) - 1 Part
Anecdotal claims that Essiac improves immunity are not supported by US or Canadian scientific clinical studies so Essiac has never been approved by the FDA as an immunity booster. As a breakment Essiac is unproven, unsubstantiated claims are illegal, but as a dietary food supplement it is not a medical approach.
If you are interested in the scientific research that has been done on alternative immunity boosters including Essiac, you may want to read a report published by the U.S. Office of Technology Assessment. The report is called, "Unconventional Approaches," and was published in 1990. Chapter 4 deals with herbal products including Essiac. The report collected the available published studies on Essiac tea and other alternative ways to improve immunity.
"The two main species useful for health of rhubarb are R.palmatum, introduced into Europe in 1762, and R.officinale, introduced in 1867. The cultivation of R.palmatum was given high priority in the 18th century. A map of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (originally a physic garden), dated 1777, indicates a very large area devoted to its cultivation. R.palmatum is one of the most widely used Chinese herbs. It was first mentioned in the Shen Nong Canon of Herbs, which dates back to the Han dynasty (206BC-AD23). Rhubarbs contain anthraquinone glycosides, which act as strong laxatives.
Several species can be used to support health, including R.officinale, R.australe (Himalayan rhubarb, Indian rhubarb), and the hybrid R.palmatum x R.coreanum, (Japanese rhubarb). Many other names exist, such as "Turkey rhubarb," and "Dutch rhubarb," which usually refer to the commercial source of the product, rather than the country of origin.
These rhubarbs vary slightly in chemistry but are used interchangeably."

Fast brewing method: Bring freshly drawn cold water to a rolling boil. Place 1 teaspoon of tea for each cup into the teapot. Pour the boiling water into the teapot. Cover and let steep for 3-7 minutes according to taste (the longer the steeping time the stronger the tea).
Overnight decoction brewing method: Some believe that a longer brewing period is necessary to extract the full medicinal benefits of the herbs in this blend. 1. Place 2 1/2 gallons of sodium-free filtered, spring or distilled water in a 4 gallon pot with lid on. 2. Bring water to a rolling boil. 3. Add 1 cup of tea. 4. Turn stove off. 5. Allow tea to steep for 4 to 12 hours. 6. Turn stove to medium-high. Heat tea to almost boiling, for 20 minutes. Do not let tea boil. 7. Transfer tea through a strainer into a large pot, so that all liquid is separated from the loose tea. Discard the loose tea. 8. Pour separated tea liquid into sterile containers with lids - do not use aluminum. Tighten caps and allow to cool. Once cooled, loosen caps once, then tighten lids a final time. 9. Place bottled tea liquid into fridge. Let it stand overnight. Do not freeze or microwave.
