Description

Linden flowers, or lime flowers, have medicinal benefits for the liver, the nerves, and for digestion. They are known to provide nervine, hypotensive, and calming effects on the body. The biochemical makeup of linden flowers includes a volatile oil, flavonoids containing hesperidin, quercitin, astralagin and others; the flowers also contain mucilage, phenolic acids, and tannins. Traditionally, linden flower is prescribed for colds, influenza, fevers, headaches, and hypertension.

In Europe, linden flowers are commonly used as an herbal beverage tea second only to chamomile, with which it combines very well. This is because of both its fine aroma and flavor, especially when sweetened with a little honey. The simple combination of equal parts chamomile and linden flowers is an ideal home remedy for the entire family for the treatment of influenzas, colds, common headaches and menstrual discomfort. The flavor is rather pleasant and thus it will readily be taken by those who are adverse to bitter-tasting teas.

In one study (described by Rudoph Weiss, Herbal Medicine) conducted by two pediatricians (Traismann and Hardy) at the University of Chicago, fifty-five children with influenza symptoms were treated with bed rest and at most one or two aspirins a day. Thirty-seven were, in addition to this, given sulphonamides, and still another sixty-seven had only antibiotics. The two pediatricians conducting the study were surprised that the children taking only linden blossom tea and bed rest recovered most quickly with the fewest complications (middle ear infections). Those given chemotherapy and antibiotics took longer with more complications. Linden blossom tea was ten times more effective on the average.

One of the best diaphoretic combinations for colds, flus and fevers is equal parts linden blossoms, chamomile and elder blossoms. One could add or substitute red clover blossoms or lemon balm for any one of these if desired.

Dosage: Standard infusion of one ounce steeped in a pint of boiling water for 10-20 minutes; take as often as desired.

Directions

Hot tea brewing method: Bring freshly drawn cold water to a rolling boil. Place 1 tea bag for each cup into the teapot. Pour the boiling water into the teapot. Cover and let steep for 3-7 minutes according to taste (the longer the steeping time the stronger the tea).

Iced tea brewing method (to make 1 liter/quart): Place 6 tea bags into a teapot or heat resistant pitcher. Pour 1 1/4 cups of freshly boiled water over the tea. Steep for 5 minutes. Quarter fill a serving pitcher with cold water. Pour the tea into your serving pitcher straining the bags. Add ice and top-up the pitcher with cold water. Garnish and sweeten to taste. [A rule of thumb when preparing fresh brewed iced tea is to double the strength of hot tea since it will be poured over ice and diluted with cold water].
