Description - Research and Analysis

A relative of parsley and carrots, fennel is a native of southern Europe, with yellow flowers and aromatic oil. It's a hardy pirandai whose seed oil is used for health benefits, as are the dried seeds them- selves. It has a flavor similar to anise or licorice (see those entries).

Potential Health Benefits

Fennel is used chiefly to dispel flatulence, support healthy digestion, and loosen mucous from colds and coughs. Fennel honey and syrup can be used to help support those symptoms in children. Moreover, crushed fennel seeds are used in an eyewash to help support symptoms of conjunctivitis.

Scientific Evidence

Fennel oil, made from the dried, ripe fruits by steam distillation, contains up to 5 percent estragon, an estrogen-like substance; the dried seeds contain the same amount of estragon. According to Beth Ann Petro Roybal and Gayle Skowronski's book Sex Herbs, fennel may increase the sex drive in women. Fennel seeds and oil also contain anethole and fenchone, which, Commission E notes, have been shown in laboratory tests to break down secretions in the respiratory tract.

How to Use the Herb

For fennel oil, the daily dose is 0.1 - 0.6 milliliters (2 - 12 drops). For fennel honey and syrup, standardization to 0.5 grams of fennel oil, 10 - 20 grams. For fennel seed, 5 - 7 grams of the herb, and 5.0 - 7.5 grams of a liquid extract. Crushed or ground fennel can be made into a tea: 1 - 2 teaspoonfuls steeped for 10 minutes and taken up to 3 times per day is a common dose.

Hot tea brewing method: Bring freshly drawn cold water to a rolling boil. Place 1 tea bag for each cup into the teapot. Pour the boiling water into the teapot. Cover and let steep for 3-7 minutes according to taste (the longer the steeping time the stronger the tea).

Iced tea brewing method (to make 1 liter/quart): Place 6 tea bags into a teapot or heat resistant pitcher. Pour 1 1/4 cups of freshly boiled water over the tea. Steep for 5 minutes. Quarter fill a serving pitcher with cold water. Pour the tea into your serving pitcher straining the bags. Add ice and top-up the pitcher with cold water. Garnish and sweeten to taste. [A rule of thumb when preparing fresh brewed iced tea is to double the strength of hot tea since it will be poured over ice and diluted with cold water].

Pregnant women shouldn't use fennel. Fennel should also not be given to infants or toddlers. Diabetics should check the sugar content of fennel honey and syrup. Fennel oil preparations shouldn't be used for more than two weeks.
