Description

Siberian Ginseng is one of the world's favorite and time-honored herbs. The plant produces umbellate flowers, and black oval berries and a woody root. It is from the root that the health benefits of Siberian Ginseng are derived.

Siberian Ginseng is a relatively new addition to Western natural medicine, but has quickly gained a reputation similar to that of the better known and more expensive Chinese Ginseng. Though the chemical make-up of the two herbs differs, their effects seem to be similar. Like its Chinese counterpart, Siberian Ginseng is taken to increase energy and concentration, relieve fatigue, and fight off infections. In tests of healthy volunteers, those who took liquid extract of Siberian Ginseng had higher levels of infection-fighting blood cells.

Found in Siberia, northern China, Korea, and Japan, the Siberian Ginseng plant grows 3 to 10 feet high with branches thickly covered in pale, thorny bristles. The root of the plant is the medicinal part.

Directions

Hot tea brewing method: Bring freshly drawn cold water to a rolling boil. Place 1 teaspoon for each cup into the teapot. Pour the boiling water into the teapot. Cover and let steep for 3-7 minutes according to taste (the longer the steeping time the stronger the tea).

Iced tea brewing method (to make 1 liter/quart): Place 6 teaspoons into a teapot or heat resistant pitcher. Pour 1 1/4 cups of freshly boiled water over the tea. Steep for 5 minutes. Quarter fill a serving pitcher with cold water. Pour the tea into your serving pitcher straining the leaves. Add ice and top-up the pitcher with cold water. Garnish and sweeten to taste. [A rule of thumb when preparing fresh brewed iced tea is to double the strength of hot tea since it will be poured over ice and diluted with cold water].
