A source of calcium in the citrate form for optimum absorption. Ideal for women with osteoporosis or at risk of osteoporosis since it can be absorbed better than calcium carbonate. Many postmenopausal women produce inadequate amounts of hydrochloric acid in the stomach, making it difficult for them to absorb calcium if they supplement with calcium carbonate. Calcium citrate is more easily absorbed even when stomach acid is inadequate.
The citrate form of calcium or magnesium is easier to absorb than other forms. it is estimated that 40% of post-menopausal women have significant stomach acid deficiencies and most of them do not know it. Stomach acid is a factor in optimal calcium absorption and the citrate form of calcium is able to compensate for diminished stomach acid.
Generally speaking, people with a stomach acid deficiency absorb approximately 45% of the citrate form of calcium, compared to approximately 4% absorption of calcium carbonate. Adding vitamin D enhances the absorption process even more.
Calcium in the form of calcium citrate does not require stomach hydrochloric acid for absorption. This means that it is more readily absorbed and utilized by the body and can also be taken on an empty stomach. Calcium citrate never leads to the formation of calcium kidney stones. Another unique advantage that comes with taking calcium citrate is that unlike other forms of calcium, it never blocks iron absorption.
Citrate salts of particular minerals are better absorbed into the bloodstream. The citric acid content provides efficient breakdown and absorption which is ideal for people whose gastric acid secretion is impaired. The trade-off is that, typically, there is a lower concentration of the elemental mineral ingredient in a citrate formula.
