Selenium is an essential antioxidant mineral cofactor that is needed to recycle the antioxidant glutathione. The body makes glutathione and it is a central antioxidant. Once it is spent as an antioxidant it is useless until recycled. Glutathione has been shown to scavenge free radicals and prevent damage to cellular membranes and other structures. A person's general health status is directly effected by how well they can recycle glutathione back into service. Optimal selenium levels in the body are associated with reduced risk of cancer and heart disease. Selenium works well with other antioxidants, particularly Vitamin E.
