Description
B6 is involvolved in nearly 60 enzyme systems in the body. It is necessary for normal growth, red blood cell synthesis and vitamin B12 absorption.
Vitamin B6 is often called "the woman's vitamin" as it is helpful for reducing PMS symptoms and may help relieve or prevent moodswings associated with the use of oral contraceptives. Vitamin B6 may also help to prevent complications during pregnancy including nausea and vomiting, gestational diabetes, intrauterine growth retardation, and toxemia.
Research has shown that vitamin B6 (usually in doses of 50 to 200mg per day) can prevent or relieve the syptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome and may be helpful of asthma. Taken in conjunction with folic acid and vitamin B12, B6 can lower homocysteine levels, to reduce the risk of cardiovescular disease. By inhibiting the production of oxalate, vitamin B6 may prevent calcium oxalate kidney stone recurrence.
Persons at risk for vitamin B6 deficiency are those individuals with a malabsorption problem such as lactose intolerance or celiac disease; people with diabetes; the elderly; women who are pregnant, nursing or taking oral contraceptives.
