Best of Linux Distributions
Publisher's Notes The Best of Linux Distributions is based on Matt Welsh's cult classic Linux Installation & Getting Started. Revised, expanded, and updated, The Best of Linux Distributions includes a general introduction to Linux; detailed explanations of drive partitioning, filesystems, and software package installation; distribution-specific instructions for installing Debian GNU/Linux, Slackware, Caldera OpenLinux, and Red Hat Linux; a complete, low-stress Linux tutorial; system administration under Linux; X Window; and Networking. Also included are 4 CD-ROMs containing the latest Linux operating system for Red Hat Linux, Caldera OpenLinux, Debian GNU/Linux, and Slackware.
From the Foreword The number of Linux users is increasing each and every day. One of the most often asked questions prior to actually using Linux is "Which distribution should I use?" There is no easy answer to this question. What might be the best choice for one computing environment may be less than adequate for the next. In addition, each Linux distribution has a unique flavor which may or may not be to the user's liking.
The Best of Linux Distributions offers installation instructions for four of the most varied and popular Linux distributions currently available. In addition, you will find valuable general Linux information which is equally applicable to all the distributions discussed. In an afternoon, you should be able to install all four of the distributions and answer the question "Which Linux distribution is best for me?"
The Best of Linux Distributions is a derived version of the immensely popular Linux Installation and Getting Started by Matt Welsh. Linux Press has reviewed the original text and updated it to reflect current Linux information. In addition, the installation sections for Caldera OpenLinux, Debian, Red Hat, and Slackware have been greatly expanded.
Linux Installation and Getting Started is part of the Linux Documentation Project (LDP). Linux Press encourages users to review the home site of this project... Both financial contributions information and additional Linux documentation can be found there.
