The man of science, Orphila, recommended its use in cases of poisoning by opium, tobacco, henbane and wild lettuce, mushrooms, digitalis and strychnine. Coffee is often used in pharmacy to cover the taste of some drugs and particularly quinine sulphate of which it completely masks the bitter flavor.
Safe and effective dose ranges for caffeine have never really been established, but millions of Americans consume three to four cups of coffee per day. Given an average caffeine content of 50 milligrams per cup, a total of 200 milligrams per day is unlikely to cause problems for anyone.
