Description

Blueberry leaves are the primary part of the plant used medicinally. Blueberry is related to the European bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus). Several species of blueberries exist-including V. globulare and V. corymbosum-and grow throughout the United States. Tannins make up as much as 10% of blueberry leaves. The astringent nature of tannins probably accounts for the usefulness of blueberry leaf in treating diarrhea. The astringent effect may also be soothing for sore throats. The berries and leaves also contain anthocyanosides, which protect blood vessels. These constituents have been shown to prevent bacteria from attaching themselves to the lining of the urinary bladder. These constituents are the same as those found in blueberry's cousin cranberry. Studies have not yet been done to determine if blueberry can help prevent bladder infections. Bilberry, blueberry's European cousin, is used primarily for maintaining blood vessels, particularly those in the eyes. Some preliminary evidence indicates that anthocyanosides may help people with diabetes, particularly if they have damage to the retina (retinopathy). Blueberry has also been shown to be an effective diuretic, and to be useful against rheumatism.

Directions

Fresh drawn, boiling water contains the most oxygen, thereby giving the fullest taste to tea. Water that has been boiling for some time looses the oxygen and thereby the best taste.

Allow full expansion during the infusion and easy removal after the time for steeping has elapsed.

Draw into a tea pot or kettle the best fresh water that you have available.

Warm the teapot and cups while the water is boiling.
