The Ginkgo is said to be the most ancient tree on earth and is sacred in China. It is a magnificent specimen tree often grown in the West to line avenues as nothing adversely affects it, not even pollution. The leaves and seeds are used in Chinese medicine for asthma and coughs. It is grown for its beautiful foliage, and its curiosity as the "fossil tree."
History
The maidenhair tree has been found in fossil records predating mammals. Seeds were sent back from China and Japan in the eighteenth century. The name comes from the Japanese Ginkyo or "silver apricot." Native to central China, it is extinct in the wild though preserved and grown in temple gardens.
Characteristics
A hardy deciduous tree reaching up to 130 feet. Conical when young, its branches form a broad crown with age. It has lobed, fan-shaped leaves up to 5 inches across on long stalks. They are spectacular in autumn, turning golden yellow. Male flowers, which are short yellow catkins, and female flowers, which come in pairs of tiny cap shaped ovules, are borne on separate trees. The fruits - which smell of rancid butter and contain edible nuts - only appear when trees are near to each other and after a long summer.
Growing Tips
Buy a small tree or propagate from ripe seed. Grow in any fertile soil in sun.
How to Use
Medicinally, Ginkgo is well known for its stimulating effect on the circulation to the brain and periphery but it has also been effectively used for treatment of asthma, allergic inflammatory conditions, Raynaud's disease, and varicose veins.

Directions
Fresh drawn, boiling water contains the most oxygen, thereby giving the fullest taste to tea. Water that has been boiling for some time looses the oxygen and thereby the best taste.
Allow full expansion during the infusion and easy removal after the time for steeping has elapsed.
Draw into a tea pot or kettle the best fresh water that you have available.
Warm the teapot and cups while the water is boiling.
Cautions
May increase the effects of MAO-inhibitors. Consult a medical professional before using, if you are taking any anti-depressants.
