Java Tea, or Misai kucing and Kumis kucing, as it is known in other cultures, is typically used for conditions related to the kidney, bladder liver, and gallbladder, and it also has a history of use related to hypertension and high cholesterol. Although it has not been supported by scientific research, Java Tea is believed to be benficial for rheumatism and gout.
Java Tea growns in areas of Southeast Asia and the tropical regions of Australia where it is cultivated exclusively for its medicinal qualities and it is picked throughout the year. It typically grows to a mature height of between 2 and 4 feet, blooming in attractive white, pink, lilac or violet flowers that have a spiked or spiraled arangement of long stamens, not unlike some beebalm cultivars. These unique flowers eminating from tall stocks also resemble delphiniums, although the wild spiral arrangement of long floral spikes make them decidedly unique. These long stamens have often been compared to a cat's whiskers explaining the plant's Dutch Indonesian name, koemis koetjing, which literally translates into "cat's whiskers". The compactness of the foliage and the leaf arrangement (opposite pairs) and type (serrated edges) resemble the peppermint plant, although the unpleasant, slightly bitter taste of the Java Tea plant has little in common with the familiar peppermint flavour known to everyone.
Despite the uniquen, attention-grabbing floral display of the plant, it is, in fact, the pointed leaves and the reddish, erect stems of the Java Tea plant that have been used medicinally. Chemically speaking, the plant contains flavones (including sinensetin), a glycoside (orthosiphon), a volatile oil, and vast quantities of potassium.
Java Tea's subtle diuretic action is what makes it particularly well-suited to kidney and urinary tract irrigation. The anti-spasmodic actions of Java Tea are beneficial to the smooth muscle that lines the the walls of the internal organs; this property has led to the plant's use in disorders of the gallbladder. Antiseptic action has also been confirmed in laboratory research.
Java Tea goes by many names and there are numerous variants, however it is ususally Orthosiphon stamineus and Orthosiphon aristata (Labiatae) that are the species most often used as the subject of herbal and medicinal research.
Java Tea is listed in the French, Indonesia, Dutch, and Swiss pharmacopoeias for conditions related to renal cleansing and function, and related disorders that include nephritis, cystitis, and urethritis.

There are currently no documented reports of side
effects, although further studies are necessary. The FDA
has not reviewed java tea for safety or effectiveness,
however, this herb is listed in numerous pharmacopeias
worldwide and is prescribed regularly in many other
countries. It is prescribed almost exclusively for
kidney complaints and has a solid track
record
where safety and efficacy are concerned.
You
should always contact your healthcare practitioner before
taking any herbal supplements, and java tea is no
exception. Those with edema or
swelling due to kidney disease,
liver disease or diabetes
should be
cautioned before taking java tea and a qualified
healthcare provider or pharmacist should be notified of
these conditions as well as any current medications you
may be taking.
As far as research goes, the bulk
of the results are still confined to animal or in vitro
research. Adequate funding for long-term clinical human
trials is required, but there are some results that have
been published: a Japanese study from 1999 demonstrated
how an extract from java tea leaves was effective in
lowering blood pressure; a very recent
study out of Thailand has shown how the aqueous extract
of java tea alleviated hyperglycemia in
diabetic rats; Malaysian research trials (Malaysia is one
of the main areas of the plant's cultivation) are ongoing
and some research suggests that java tea is effective in
treating kidney stone disease; we look
forward to reporting more research results as they are
made available to us.

Question: Can Type 2 Diabetics take this product? Question: Does this product interfere with taking the oil soluble vitamins?

Orthosiphon, or java tea, has the ability to lower blood glucose levels, so it may be effective in the treatment of type II diabetes. This has been demonstrated in an Asian study of type II diabetics receiving Orthosiphon aristatus; the product in question is Orthposiphon stamineus, so I cannot confidently say that they are one and the same. They are often cited as being synonymous with the common name 'java tea' or 'cat's whiskers', however.
Java Tea / E.I. Kidney should not interfere with other oil-based or oil-soluble supplements like vitamins A and E.
Taking supplements of fenugreek and gymnema sylvestre as well as adding cinnamon to the diet can be very beneficial at managing blood glucose levels. TerraVita Diabetes Formula includes both fenugreek and gymnema sylvestre plus additonal blood vessel support with antioxidants, bilberry and grape seed extract to aid any complications that may occur with the eyes or extremeties.

Does Java Tea Orthosiphon Powder help me to lose weight?
ZooScape Moderator - April 19, 2006, 18:09
#10001243
There doesn't seem to be any firm evidence suggesting
that java tea will help with weight loss. It may,
however, help with the effects of obesity that include
high blood pressure,
high blood glucose levels, or potential
complications related
to the liver, kidneys, and
gall bladder. Due to the reported
diuretic actions of java tea, the loss of
fluids
may result in a very minimal and short-term weight loss
effect, but this is a stretch. I have not seen any
research results related to fat metabolism or
emulsification. A properly balanced diet, maybe a few
well-chosen supplements like
Terravita's Grapefruit Plus or some of the
MetaSlim products found
here, plus regular exercise, of course,
still remains the most effective way to lose weight and
keep it off. But please keep in mind that the supplements
are not intended to replace either diet or exercise and
should never be regarded as a magic pill or quick and
easy solution of any kind.
Directions
Take 1 capsule at each meal with a large glass of water.
Ingredients
Java Tea (Orthosiphon spicatus) - 450 mg
Cautions
Do not flush out the urinary system with Java Tea or any other medication if you are retaining water due to poor heart or kidney function.

This product gave me obvious results in less than 14 days. I purchased it for a cellulite problem on the back of my legs & fanny. I am not over weigh & have tried exercise & topical solutions with poor results. I looked into lyposuction & could not afford it. I have a poorly working lymph system due to a viral disease which causes cellulite in some cases. The Kava Tea helped stimulate my lymph system so that I could eleminate toxins & fat stored in the tissue. In less than 14 days I have reduced the area to just a small area on each cheek.

Java Tea
I purchased Java Tea to minimize cellulite. I noticed a slight difference in the appearance of my legs; however, at the same time I found my Thyroid levels are low. I feel it would have been more effective if my levels were normal!

Java Tea
I purchased this product to help me with my fat storage (cellulite). I have a lot of it so I really don't know if it is helping me or not. However I will still be taking it until the bottle is empty.. I will come back with a review after.. Thank you
This product was recommended for cellulite, but I have used it for two weeks at this point and see no difference in my skin. It may be very possible that it needs more time so I will finish the bottle and be back to review again.

Use of Java Tea to assist in weight-loss
I have taken Java Tea capsules as directed for three weeks and have noticed no difference in my weight, with eating and drinking as normal. I will continue the product for at least double that time and give it a chance to work. Will send more info at that time. JH

Stick With Tradition
I purchased this Java Tea for the purpose of weight loss and reduction of fat. After taking it for nearly 3 months I have seen no visible difference. It simply does not seem to work for that purpose. However, it has done what it has been traditionally know to do in being a diurhetic and removing general toxins from the body. Perhaps it only works to reduce cellulite in persons who are not really overweight but simply want to smooth their skin's appearance, but it did not help someone who is more than 50 lbs. overweight to reduce in size whatsoever.

I am a kidney patient and undergoing kidney dialysis treatment. I took Java Tea together with CoQ10 for the past 30 days. As a result, my blood pressure went down to 120/80. A great improvement.
