Description
Goldenrod is a remedy for kidney and bladder stones and urinary tract infections.
Several species of Goldenrod are used to treat urinary infections and kidney and bladder stones. In folk medicine, the solidago virgaurea species has been especially popular, and has been used to treat such diverse ailments as rheumatism, gout, diabetes, hemorrhoids, enlarged prostate, asthma, internal bleeding, enlarged liver, tuberculosis, mouth and throat infections, and festering wounds. Its effectiveness for these conditions remains unproven. In homeopathic medicine, Goldenrod is used for respiratory conditions and kidney pain.
Because Goldenrod is a diuretic, drawing water from the body, it is used to flush out the urinary system during infections. It also provides limited action against spasms and inflammation.
Goldenrod is found throughout North America, Europe, and some parts of Asia. For medicinal purposes, the above-ground parts of the plant are gathered during the flowering season and carefully dried.
The scientific name "Solidago" comes from the Latin term "solidare," meaning the plant that consolidates or makes whole.

Cautions
Do not take Goldenrod if you have chronic kidney disease. Do not use it to flush the urinary tract if you have swelling caused by heart or kidney problems.
Goldenrod is unlikely to cause problems when taken at usual dosage levels, but be sure to drink lots of fluids while using it.
