Description
This plant, when brushed, gives off a strong unpleasant smell, has an acrid bitter taste and is regarded as an aperitive, sudorific and vulnerary. This species, known in French as petit-chéne has been acknowledged as a tonic, stomachic and vermifuge. The Marum is related to this latter, also being a tonic, pleasant smelling, but so penetrating that it causes sneezing. Of the Water Germander, Galen said that bodies found lying on patches of these plants after battle took much longer to decay than the others.
