Description
Turmeric, or Curcuma, is commonly used for appetite loss, liver and gallbladder problems.
Turmeric has also been used internally for indigestion, gas, bloating, stomach pain, cramps, diarrhea, fever, swelling, bronchitis, colds, chest infections, worms, leprosy, kidney and bladder inflammation, headaches, and missed menstrual periods.
(Applied externally, it has been used as treatment for bruises, leech bites, festering eye infections, inflammation in the mouth, inflamed skin, and infected wounds. Its value for any of these conditions has not, however, been scientifically verified.)
Turmeric is more commonly used as a spice than as a medicine, though it does seem to have anti-inflammatory properties. Among its many mildly medicinal effects are antitumor and antibacterial activity, relief of liver damage, and stimulation of bile production. The medicinal part of the plant is its fleshy underground stem.
Turmeric comes from a leafy perennial with huge, lily-like leaves that grow nearly 4 feet in length. The plant is probably native to India, but today is cultivated throughout tropical southern Asia and Indonesia.

The essence of the current American rule on Traditional Uses is, as stated by FTC, "Claims based on historical or traditional use should be substantiated by confirming scientific evidence, or should be presented in such a way that consumers understand that the sole basis for the claim is a history of use of the product for a particular purpose."
