| | Description
Boneset has multiple properties: It is a tonic for the liver and kidneys, it relieves liver insufficiencies, but it is primarily a stimulant for the immune system, reinforcing a weakened body by infections (influenza, fever or colds), especially when repetitive. It also has an anti-inflammatory action on the respiratory tract. Native Americans pioneered the use of boneset as a treatment for a wide range of infectious, fever-related conditions. Europeans eventually adopted the use of the plant, and some claimed it was even occasionally effective in treating malaria.
Boneset contains sesquiterpene lactones, such as euperfolin, euperfolitin, and eufoliatin, as well as polysaccharides and flavonoids. In test tube and other studies, extracts of boneset have been shown to stimulate immune cell function. This may explain its ability to help fight off minor viral infections, such as colds and the flu. Boneset also triggers sweating by raising body temperature, also potentially of benefit for colds and flu.
Boneset's leaves and flowering tops are used medicinally. It belongs to the same botanical family as echinacea and daisy (Asteraceae). Boneset grows primarily in North America. | |
