Description
Controlled clinical trials have shown black cohosh to be an effective remedy for treating menopausal symptoms. But since it does not contain any estrogens, taking this herb will not prevent osteoporosis or heart disease. For most women, the best approach is probably to combine the use of black cohosh with standard estrogen replacement. For those who cannot take estrogen, black cohosh may offer a viable alternative. Reports of toxicity are very rare.

The essence of the current American rule on Traditional Uses is, as stated by FTC, "Claims based on historical or traditional use should be substantiated by confirming scientific evidence, or should be presented in such a way that consumers understand that the sole basis for the claim is a history of use of the product for a particular purpose."
