The country of origin is not known for certain, but it is believed to have spread from Siberia through to Europe and central Asia. The plant is cultivated worldwide, but Egypt, Bulgaria and France are the major oil-producing countries.
Extraction Method
Steam distillation of the fresh, crushed bulbs.
Nature of the Oil
A colourless to pale yellow liquid. It has an overpowering sulphurous odour which can only be described as 'garlicky'.
Main Constituents
Allicin, various suiphides such as allyipropyl disuiphide, citral, geraniol, linalol, phellandrene.
Because of its offensive odour and skin irritant properties, garlic oil is best taken orally in the form of garlic capsules for conditions such as gastrointestinal infections, intestinal worms, respiratory ailments, heart and circulatory disorders, and as a prophylactic against infectious illness such as colds and flu.
