Chitosan is a natural, water soluble derivative of chitin, a form of cellulose that composes the exoskeleton of crustaceans. It is a partially de-acetylated polymer of N-acetyl glucosamine. The de-acetylation percentage is a measure of quality and solubility, with percentages of 90% or greater being the best. Chitosan has an amazing ability to bind fats and remove them from the body. This ability allows it to be an effective weightloss aid, as it attracts ingested fat in the stomach and removes it. Chitosan also effects lipids in the blood and lowers cholesterol and triglyceride levels, by reducing absorption from the intestines. Chitosan has also been associated with lowered blood pressure, treating irritable bowel symdrome and is reported to have anti-gout and anti-tumour properties.

May cause constipation. May affect the availability of certain nutrients (essential fatty acids, fat-soluble vitamins, calcium and other minerals).
