Dong Quai has been used for centuries as a female tonic to treat such conditions as painful and irregular menstruation. It used for menopausal symptoms (especially hot flashes and vaginal dryness), and has also been used to treat abdominal pain, anemia, injuries, arthritis, migraine headache, and many other conditions. It increases the effects of ovarian and testicular hormones. It is frequently used by the Chinese as a strengthening treatment for the heart, spleen, liver and kidneys, and a blood tonic for both men and women. This herb contains coumarin derivatives, cadinene, carvacrol, ligustilide, butylphthalide, ferrulic acid, isosafrol, essential oils, sucrose, vitamins A, B6, B12 and E.
