| | Description
Mullein is native to Europe and Asia, although it has been naturalized in the U.S. It bears yellow clustered flowers and is known by many names, including Donkey's Ears, Bunny's Ears and Velvet Plant. Mullein has a long history of use in many cultures. It has a high mucilage content and contains mild saponins, making it suitable for occasional needs of the respiratory system.
Therapeutic Actions and Indications
Mullein is excellent in treating upper respiratory conditions such as bronchitis due to its tonic action on mucous membranes of the respiratory system. It also reduces inflammation of the trachea and at the same time soothes inflamed tissues. Mullein is used for its expectorant, demulcent, anti-viral and mild diuretic properties. Mullein's key constituents are Flavonoids, Tannins, Volatile oils, Mucilage, Triterpenoid saponins. Mullein is used specifically for bronchitis with hard cough and soreness. It is also used for colds and congestion. The leaves and flowers are used to reduce mucous and stimulate coughing up of phlegm. It has also been shown to have anti-viral efficacy against herpes virus type 1.

The essence of the current American rule on Traditional Uses is, as stated by FTC, "Claims based on historical or traditional use should be substantiated by confirming scientific evidence, or should be presented in such a way that consumers understand that the sole basis for the claim is a history of use of the product for a particular purpose."
