The leaves of the gymnema sylvestre plant have been used in India for more than 2000 years. Its common name is "sugar destroyer", because chewing the leaves destroys the ability to discriminate the sweetness of foods. The primary clinical application for this botanical is as an antidiabetic agent. Gymnema has been the subject of considerable research since the 1930s, with promising results for types 1 and 2 diabetes. Gymnema's antidiabetic activity appears to be due to a combination of mechanisms. It appears to greatly increase the number of insulin-secreting beta cells in the pancreas, while returning blood sugar levels to near normal. It increases the activity of enzymes responsible for glucose uptake and utilization. It has also been found to inhibit some forms of hyperglycemia.

Can you take this product as part of a diet plan if you are a border-line diabetic?

I would say that Gymnema Sylvestre Leaf would be helpful for your condition if you are experiencing symptoms of diabetes. Of course, it is always recommended that you speak with your physician before beginning any course of treatment to determine if it would be helpful for you.
Indian physicians first used Gymnema to treat diabetes almost 2,000 years ago. In the 1920s, preliminary scientific studies found some evidence that Gymnema leaves can reduce blood sugar levels, but nothing much came of this observation for decades. Today, Gymnema has become increasingly popular in the United States as a supportive treatment for diabetes.
Gymnema leaves raise insulin levels, according to research in healthy volunteers. Based on animal studies, this may be due to regeneration of the cells in the pancreas that secrete insulin. Other animal research shows that Gymnema can also improve uptake of glucose into cells and prevent adrenaline from stimulating the liver to produce glucose, thereby reducing blood sugar levels.
This product has allowed me to cut back on my oral medication by 1/3rd and has helped me control my blood sugar by keeping it to between 120 and 130 on average. Before I started the Gymnema, my morning glucose ran 120-140. Now it is consistantly between 90-100 in the morning.
This stuff is a godsend...

My wife was diagnosed with type 2 Diabetes in 1991 and struggled for many years to keep her blood sugar to a reasonable level even having to face the possibility of going on insulin. After coming across a mention of Gymnema Sylvestre in a Woman's magazine we tried to find it in the UK with little result. We turned to the Internet and found ZooScape and have been buying Herb Extra 450mg leaf for some years now. Her blood sugar levels are much more lower and stable now. Thank you ZooScape.
