Other Names: Damiana (French); Damiana (German); damiana (Italian).
Description: Damiana is an aromatic shrub of up to 2 m in height, with erect stems bearing simple, toothed leaves. Yellow, solitary flowers are borne at the branch tips.
Origin: Tropical America (Caribbean Islands, Mexico and southern California). The shrub is cultivated to a limited extent, but most of the raw material is obtained from wild-harvesting.
Parts Used: Dried leaves (Damianae folium).
Therapeutic Category: General tonic, traditional aphrodisiac.
Uses and Properties: Damiana is claimed to be a stimulant and aphrodisiac that is used for the prevention and treatment of sexual disturbances, loss of libido, menstrual problems, impotence and prostate problems. It is considered useful for countering fatigue, overwork, depression and stress. In aromatherapy, the essential oil is considered to be uplifting. In Mexico, an infusion is drunk like ordinary black tea.
Preparation and Dosage: An infusion of 2 - 4 g of dried herb is taken three times per day. Extracts and tinctures are also used, and are included as an ingredient of various urinary formulations, tablets and tonics.
Active Ingredients: The herb is chemically poorly known. It contains a cyanogenic glycoside (tetraphyllin B) and low levels (up to 0.7%) arbutin (a phenolic glycoside). The plant yields an essential oil containing various monoterpenoids and sesquiterpenoids (including alpha-pinene, beta-pinene, calamene, alpha-copaene, delta-cadinene, rhymol and possibly also 1,8-cineole and p-cymene). The presence of unspecified gum, tannins, bitter principles, phytosterols and resins has been reported.
Pharmacological Effects: There is scientific evidence to justify the traditional use of damiana herb as aphrodisiac. Hypoglycaemic and urerotonic effects have been noted. Arbutin is known as a diuretic and urinary tract disinfectant but the levels in damiana are considered too low to be therapeutically significant.
