These studies used ashwagandha plant extract which would have a higher concentration of the active ingredient as compared to parts of the whole ashwaghanda plant. However, while plant extracts isolate the potent 'Withanolides' in the plant, and are extremely effective due to their concentration, ground root (most commonly used part) of a fresh plant is far superior to that of its dried supplement counterpart.
