Description
With a physique designed specifically for speed, the Cheetah is the fastest land animal in the world. From its long legs and lean build to its muscular tail (which helps the Cheetah to maintain balance during a high-speed chase). these graceful felines are able to reach speeds of close to 70 mph. A running Cheetah touches only one foot to the ground at a time, and has a respiratory rate that climbs from 60 to 150 breaths per minute. Cheetahs live singly or in small groups, with male cubs staying together for life. Although cubs remain with their mothers for about the first 18 months, mortality is as high as 90% in the wild. It is estimated that the Cheetah population has dropped to 10% of what it was in 1900, and continues to plummet due to loss of habitat, decline of prey species and conflict with livestock farming. Fragmentation is also a significant threat to Cheetahs. As Cheetah populations are separated due to habitat destruction, the gene pool becomes severely limited, leading to high infant mortality, reproductive abnormalities and greater susceptibility to disease.
