Description
Hunted for sport, killed by trappers, shot and poisoned as nuisance animals, the Grizzly Bear, once the most widespread of all mammals and the largest living omnivore, has seen its numbers plummet from 100,000 to about 2,000. Females do not breed until they reach 5 or 6 years and reproduce once every 3 years or more. Only about 50% of bear cubs survive to adulthood. Grizzly Bears require large home ranges in order to supply their diverse diet, and while they once ranged throughout the United States west of the Mississippi and from Central Mexico north to Alaska, today, their habitat, as a result of agriculture, mining, logging and other forms of human encroachment, remains at less than 2% of their original terrain. Wherever man has appeared the Grizzly has declined.

The essence of the current American rule on Traditional Uses is, as stated by FTC, "Claims based on historical or traditional use should be substantiated by confirming scientific evidence, or should be presented in such a way that consumers understand that the sole basis for the claim is a history of use of the product for a particular purpose."
