| | Description
Tropical forests are the oldest living ecosystems on Earth. While they only cover 2% of the planet's surface, they contain 50% of the Earth's species. Rainforests are defined by the amount of rainfall they receive (between 4 and 8 meters of rain per year) and their location in the tropics. As the Earth's richest natural reserve, a typical rainforest contains 1500 species of flowering plants, 750 species of trees, 150 species of butterflies, 60 species of amphibians, 100 species of reptiles, 400 species of birds and 125 mammalian species. Also, it is said that 70% of the plants known to be useful in cancer treatments are found only in the rainforest. Whereas the Earth was once blanketed by 14.8 billion acres of flourishing tropical forests, this area had now dwindled to 8.6 billion acres- a loss that has occurred primarily in the last 50 years. Currently, we are losing an estimated 33.8 million acres of rainforest every year, which means 93,000 acres a day, 64 acres a minute. | |
