Description

There are 3 subspecies of Gorilla that remain in existence today: the Western Lowland, most often seen in zoo's of which 10,000 remain; the Eastern Lowland, with only a few thousand in existence; and, the most critical of the three, the Mountain Gorilla, of which only about 600 remain. Senselessly slaughtered for their heads and hands as trophies, neither the Mountain Gorilla nor the rare Afromontane Forest Ecosystem of which they are a part will survive without active conservation and habitat management. A Gorilla's diet consists of herbs, shrubs, vines, occasional fruit, and depends on regeneration of their dwindling habitat. Gorillas never stay long enough at one feeding site to deplete their food source completely, leaving enough growth for replenishing to occur and continue. Gorillas reproduce at a slow rate, usually once every 4 to 8 years with 40-60% of offspring perishing during their first year of life. Mountain Gorillas live in highly social groups that consist of a single mature dominant male (the silverback), 2 to 4 adult females, and 2 to 5 immature Gorillas; the death of one has a profound effect on the others of that group. Gorillas experience love, sadness, joy, and despair... just as we do.
