Rose water is the oldest beauty preparation. Used by the ancient Greeks and Romans, by the Egyptians, and in Asia, it has formed the basis of a myriad of cosmetic lotions and creams. Initially it was used for its antiseptic and healing properties but it was then found to soften the skin, reduce lines and generally have a rejuvenating effect. It smells delicious, the perfume being calmative and relaxing. Rose water is an excellent toner and rose vinegar is a good antidote to sunburn as it is exceptionally kind to sensitive skins. Rose water and glycerin is an effective balm to use on dry skin, but is not a barrier against the sun's rays. Rose petals in the bath are positively luxurious and the most strongly scented petals available are used to make water infusions, oils, and vinegars. Essential oil of rose is monstrously expensive due to the vast amount of petals needed to produce it. A few drops added to any beauty preparation, from moisturizers to massage oil, will be kind to the skin and gentle on the soul.
