Weight management by Dr. Terry Willard. Weight management is one of the most common health issues that people want to discuss in my clinic. The major herb I am going to discuss here is called CitriMax. Weight loss with this herb is not overly dramatic, 1 - 5 pounds a week, but if compliance (i.e., how regularly people use the product) is good CitriMax just keeps plugging away. There are many different theories about the best method for weight management. Finally, we have found a herb that is effective even when judged by several of the current approaches. CitriMax gives the consumer more energy, lowers their appetite and aids in preventing sugars from converting into fat. It does all of this without adverse side effects on the central nervous system. Some weight management products have been found to cause anxiety, jitters, high blood pressure and even heart palpitations. This exotic fruit from India fights fat without causing any side effects. Weight management is of great concern in North America. Over 300,000 deaths a year can be directly associated with obesity. Obesity can cause or exacerbate a range of health issues including cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes, high blood fat levels, arthritis, joint problems and even infertility. By consuming CitriMax we can affect the weight management end of the health equation. CitriMax, also known as Malabar Tamarind, Goraka or Garcinia cambogia, grows along the west coast of India where it has been used in food preparation for centuries. You can also find this group of fruits used in Sri Lanka, Thailand, Malaysia, Burma and other parts of Southeastern Asia. In these countries CitriMax is considered to make a meal more "filling" Studies on this plant go back to the late 60's, but it was not until the 70's that the pharmaceutical giant Hoffmann-La Roche started taking a serious look at its ability to stimulate weight loss. Over the next several years it was also shown to decrease the production of cholesterol (especially bad cholesterol) and triglycerides, reduce appetite, increase energy, while increasing thermogenesis ("fat burning"). In twelve years of clinical use, it as been proven that CitriMax continues to be effective even after extended use. It does not cause a rebound or the "YO-YO" effect associated with many weight management plans. Long term consumption is safe, even for diabetics, but the herb is not indicated during pregnancy, breast-feeding or for young children. It does not stimulate the central nervous system and does not cross over the blood-brain barrier. It can combine nicely with other herbal nutrients. How does one herb do such amazing things? It is really very simple. CitriMax contains an active ingredient called hydroxycitric acid, HCA for short. HCA is very similar to citric acid, found in many fruits. Citric acid is responsible for a very important energy cycle in our body called the Citric acid or Krebs cycle. This biochemical cycle is responsible for converting simple sugars into energy and storing additional energy in various forms of fats. (see diagram) HCA acts as a friendly impersonator and blocks the production of fatty acids and cholesterol from this cycle. In this process, HCA redirects traffic into producing glycogen, our body's form of instant energy. This very simple process has a many fold effect on the body. Not only does the CitriMax inhibit the formation of fat from sugar, which has obvious weight management implications, it stops the formation of bad cholesterol. This bad cholesterol, also known as LDL (low density lipoprotein), is the type of cholesterol that clogs up the blood vessels and is associated with atherosclerosis, and coronary heart failure. CitriMax will further assist the body in dumping LDL out of the blood. Our friendly impersonator (HCA) does not stop at preventing the formation of bad cholesterol and fat. It redirects the traffic into the production of instant energy in the form of glycogen. Our appetite is somewhat dependent on our glycogen or energy stores. If our glycogen (energy) stores are topped up, we simply have a lower appetite. So, this friendly impersonator redirects the sugar into producing energy, thus lowering appetite, instead of storing it in the forms of fat and bad cholesterol. This extra energy is available for a more active life, whether it includes simple walking or more athletic events. Regular exercise will, of course, stimulate additional success in weight management. It is interesting to note that after consuming CitriMax for a while, a person naturally desires healthier foods. A person is not as attracted to empty calorie, grease-laden fast foods. Again, having a positive impact on weight. There has also been lots of speculation that some of the weight loss caused by the consumption of CitriMax is caused by a thermogenic (heat-generating, fat burning) effect. It appears that with the extra energy produced by the CitriMax, it not only increases physical activity, it also heats up the body by burning off extra fat that is already present. Not only has this fruit been used for centuries as a food, there have been many trials done on its safety. There simply hasn't been any long term side effects or toxicity found. It is not recommended during pregnancy or breast-feeding as these are times when weight management issues should not be considered. Long term use during a child's growing stages is also not indicated, but short term use is safe. Many diabetics have health concerns surrounding both energy and weight. This product has been shown to be completely safe and effective for diabetics. It is traditional to use herbs in formulas and since CitriMax is completely safe when taken with other nutrients we have combined it with other herbs such as country mallow, green tea extract, fever few, cascara sagrada, bearberry and bladderwrack. Green tea extract aids in emulsifying fats and greases, thereby reducing their absorption into the body. Not only does it lower fat absorption, it will aid in the reduction of body fats in the blood and tissue. Green tea is used in more weight loss formulas than any other herb. Bladderwrack has been used for many years to affect the metabolism side of weight management, increasing our body's consumption of fat. Cascara sagrada and Bearberry both help in cleansing the body. This formula has a second engine that creates a further thermogenises and that is the combination of Country Mallow and Fever few. The human body has mechanisms for both short-term and long-term storage of energy. In our hunting/gathering past, when we had stress, we would immediately convert some of the short-term storage resources into energy. This could give us a "fight or flight" advantage. Today we get stress from many directions, but we can't fight or flee. Nonetheless, the body frees up instant energy which it doesn't use ... so it converts the energy into long-term storage, fat. Constant stress without exercise can cause dramatic weight gain. Our fat cells do have receptor sites that are affected by stress. These sites stimulate the conversion of fat, changing it into energy (heat). This action is fairly short-lived, however, and needs constant stimulation to keep the fat cell burning fat. Some herbs, like Country Mallow (Sida cordifolia) can temporarily stimulate the fat cells to convert fat into energy but this action is very short-lived and normally will have very little effect on overall body weight. The theory behind herbal formulas designed for thermogenic action is to increase the length of time the cells will continue to release energy. Herbs like fever few will contribute to this effect. This synergy between herbs is much like setting the idle high on the car and having it stick in place. We can burn off fat, turning it into heat. The fever few has the added advantage of stopping food cravings when it is in combination with other herbs (thus keeping us burning fat without a desire to replace it). By adding a few other herbs we can speed up metabolism more and waste all kinds of energy. With the addition of these other herbs we can create a formula that is very functional for weight management.

Additional Information
There are many other lifestyle management strategies that should be considered when employing a weight management program: 1. It is of course best to eat less, especially simple sugars. 2. Eating three, well-balancedmeals daily will assist weight loss more than skipping meals. 3. Replacingone meal a day with a high fiber nutrient, is quite acceptable and will also enhance weight loss. 4. A moderate exercise program is still one of the best weight management tools. Digestion is often a concern in weight management programs. Many people should take digestive enzymes during their meal time, in order to better digest the food. Proper digestion is amajor key to long term weight management. It is important that your body is able to properly digest the healthy nutrients that it needs, and a digestive formula will ensure that this fundamental process is initiated. Many people with weight management issues also have a sluggish digestive tract. By taking an intestinal cleanser at bed time, elimination can be enhanced, further aiding proper long-term weight management. At Wild Rose Clinic we start many of our weight management programs with a two week detoxification program. This assists in changing the person's dietary habits, making them more aware of the food areas they need to re-evaluate.By cleansing out the body, it also makes it easier to follow a weight management program with less cravings. In summary we have found the combination of CitriMax and Country Mallow's thermogenic action to be a good addition to a weight management program. It lowers appetite, reduces fat formation, and increases energy. It can be enhanced by the use of other herbs in a formula.
