A traditional herbal medicine from dried leaves to help prevent migraine headaches.
Migraine headaches occur when a substancecalled serotonin is released in the body causing swelling and constrictionof blood vessels in the head.
The migraine prophylactic action is thought to be due to inhibition of the release of serotonin from the platelets possible via neutralization of sulphyryl groups on specific enzymes that are fundamental to platelet aggregation and secretion. Feverfew (Tanactum Parthenium) is rich in sesquiterpene lactones, principally parthenolide. Parthenolide inhibits platelet aggregation and secretory activity in platelets and white blood cells. This inhibition of serotonin will reduce the number of migraine attacks. To prevent and reduce the severity of migraines, you must build up your blood serum level of parthenolide.

Equine Serotonin Syndrome
We currently care for a 13.2 pony, who has been diagnosed with Equine Cushing's Syndrome. However, in the absence of much help from vets in treating him, I have been formulating his treatment myself, based on my own research.
We have come to the conclusion that his symptoms are caused by neurotransmitter imbalance, and his primary treatments are to increase dopamine and melatonin, and decrease serotonin.
I have been using the Swiss Formula Feverfew for the latter for a month or so now (as far as I know this has not been tried in horses before) and have been pleased with the results: decreased blood vessel distension, increased energy, bright attitude, and no sign of 'laminitis' (a painful hoof condition often part of what is normally described as Equine Cushing's).
The feverfew appears to be helping our pony in a similar fashion to one of the generally prescribed medications, cyproheptadine.
