Ylang ylang (Cananga Odorata var. Genuina) is characterized by a sweet, heavy, narcotic, and cloying middle-to-base note scent. It is also described as having a tropical, floral, fragrance with spicy-balsamic undertones. The odor intensity of ylang ylang is a full five out of five. Blending companions include clary sage, vetiver, floral, citrus, and woods. For physical ailments, the oil is used for its antidepressant, sedative, hypertensive, and aphrodisiac properties. It is also used for oily skin. In terms of emotional well-being, this oil is used to treat nervousness, and to promote euphoria; it can transform negative and stagnant emotional states, and it can open, center, and unify the spirit. This tropical flower is so sweet, it almost smells synthetic. Its distillation produces four grades of oil: ylang "extra," considered the highest grade, and subsequent distillations graded one, two, and three. A still lower quality oil, known as Cananga, is produced from Cananga odorata var. Macrophylla.
