A short-lived peremiial reaching a height of around 6 feet (2 m) with feathery leaves and umbels of small yellow flowers. All parts of the plant smell strongly of aniseed. The plant is native to the Mediterranean, but has become naturalised throughout Europe. Most of the oil is produced in Eastern Europe, Germany, France, Italy and Greece.
Extraction Method
Steam distillation of the crushed seeds.
Nature of the Oil
A virtually colourless liquid. The strong aroma is reminiscent of aniseed, but with a camphor-like undertone. The odour effect is warming and stimulating.
Bruises, gum disorders, halitosis, cellulite, rheumatism, respiratory ailments, colic, indigestion, loss of appetite, nausea, loss of menstruation outside pregnancy, menopausal problems, insufficient milk in nursing mothers.
Blends Well With
Lavender, geranium, sandalwood. The oil is highly odoriferous, so use sparingly.

Directions
All pure essential oils should be used with care. Do not apply directly into skin. A 2% dilution of essential oils to a base of carrier oil or lotion is recommended for all skincare and massage preparations.
