With a middle-note scent that is woody, spicy, and sweet, coriander oil has an odor intensity of about three out of five. Blending companions include clary sage, citrus, firs, and spices. Digestive, stimulant, antispasmodic, and antiseptic actions make the oil useful for a variety of health conditions. For emotional uses, it improves motivation, mental determination, while helping balance joy and stability. This common domestic spice is used all over the world and was found in the tomb of the Egyptian king Ramses II. It is a good substitute for endangered rosewood oil.
Coriander (Coriandrum sativum)
Description and Distribution
An annual herb reaching a height of about 3 feet (1 m) with umbels of white or pink flowers. The seeds are green at first, turning brown on ripening. Coriander is native to southern Europe and western Asia. Most of the oil is now produced in Eastern Europe.
Steam distillation of the seeds.
Nature of the Oil
A colourless to pale yellow liquid. The fragrance is light, sweet and spicy with a faintly musky undertone. Its odour effect is warming, uplifting and stimulating; a reputed aphrodisiac.
