The dried seeds of the anise plant (Pimpinella anisum), native to the Mediterranean region, an herb of the carrot family, were used as a purging agent for milt, kidneys, liver and gall; they served to help relieve flatulence and were considered a disinfectant and a support for scorbut, stomach-ache, vertigo, giddiness and nausea. They were also used to help increase the milk supply of nursing mothers and wet nurses.
