Propagation: By seed; by root division in spring, if divided later is apt to winterkill.
Nature of Plant: Good in large clumps for a shady border, but will grow in sunny, moist soil; useful for flower arrangements; fragrant leaves.
Spacing of Mature Plants: 18 inches.
Cultural Requirements: Prefers moist soil in open spaces; plants spread so quickly that they should be taken up every 3 years, divided and reset, or they are apt to die out; roots are woody and fibrous and can be pulled apart by hand; replant only outside newer roots and discard exhausted center.
To increase the size of blooms, do not let plants flower the first summer; thereafter cut back the whole plant after the first blooming and it will flower again in early autumn; late in autumn cut down stalks and cover completely with enriched soil; leaf mold on shallow, creeping roots is beneficial.
