Aromatherapy: Strengthening, sense-enhancing
Bitter almonds owe their action to two products: amygdaline and emulsin which, by fermentation, give hydrocyanic acid. Taken in isolation, these substances are not harmful, but taken togehter, they react and hydrocyanic acid is formed: hence, the danger of eating bitter almonds. The pure essence of almond, however, is not harmful.
The physiological action of bitter almonds is the same as that of hydrocyanic acid: poisoning with convulsions, prostration and paralysis. On the other hand, in a very slight dose, it has an anti-spasmodic effect. Hence, the reason why bitter almonds are used in medicine.
They are prescribed in an emulsion for asthma, whooping cough and all convulsive coughs. Sweet almonds do not contain amygdaline; they are therefore not as dangerous as bitter almonds. They are used among other things to make emulsions.
