Lavandin (Lavandula x intermedia)
Plant Family
Lamiaceae (Labiatae).
Description and Distribution
A hybrid lavender developed in the late 1920s by crossing true lavender (L. angustifolia with spike lavender L. latifolia, it reaches a height of about 2 - 2 1/2 feet (60-80 cm). The flowers may be bluish-mauve like true lavender or greyish-mauve like spike lavender. The plant is hardy, easy to cultivate and produces twice as much oil as true lavender, which is why it is increasingly preferred by growers. Although it is sometimes used in aromatherapy, most of the oil is used by the perfume industry to extract linalol. Unfortunately, lavandin is also used as an adulterant to 'bulk' the more expensive true lavender. Most of the oil is produced in France and Eastern Europe.
Extraction Method
Steam distillation of the fresh flowering tops.
Nature of the Oil
A pale to deep yellow liquid. The strong aroma is similar to true lavender, but less sweet and more camphoraceous with a woody undertone. Its odour effect is uplifting, head-clearing and refreshing.
Main Constituents
Bomecil, camphor, cineol, geraniol, linalol, linalyl acetate. Compared with true lavender, the oil contains a greater proportion of borneol and a lesser proportion of linalol.
Properties
Similar to true lavender, though perhaps a little more stimulating to the nervous system.
Aromatherapeutic Uses
The oil has properties similar to the sweeter-smelling true lavender. Being less expensive than other lavenders, lavandin could be used as a room scent or fumigant during infectious illness.
Blends Well With
Cedarwood, citrus essences, clove, cinnamon, cypress, petitgrain, pine, geranium, thyme, patchouli, rosemary. | |

| | Cautions
Compared with true lavender essence, lavandin is marginally more likely to irritate sensitive skin. I have come across a number of comparatively expensive lavender oils labelled 'L. officinalis' (true lavender) which smell suspiciously like the less expensive lavandin. It is therefore important to seek out a reputable supplier. Admittedly, this can be difficult for the newcomer to aromatherapy. | | Additional Information
