Description and Distribution
An evergreen conifer tree native to eastern and central North America. Most specimens reach up to 50 feet (15 m), though occasionally they may grow to twice this height. However, this species and other American conifers used for producing cedarwood essential oils are not true cedarwoods; their essences only have similar fra grances. True cedarwood oil is extracted from the Atlas and Himalayan varieties, Cedrus atlantica and C. deodra, respectively. Although Himalayan cedarwood has an exquisite aroma, it is extremely difficult to obtain as the tree is now a protected species.
Extraction Method
Steam distillation of the sawdust and wood shavings.
Nature of the Oil
A pale yellow or orange liquid. The-aroma is distinctly woody with a camphoraceous tinge. The odour effect is warming and calming; a reputed aphrodisiac.
Description and Distribution
A low-growing trailing perennial with finely divided leaves which give the plant a soft feathery appearance. The white daisy-like flowers are borne on solitary stems. The plant is native to southern and western Europe and is cultivated mainly in Belgium, Britain, France, Hungary, Italy and the USA.

Cedrene, cedrol, cedrenol
Properties
Abortifacient, antiseborrheic, antiseptic (pulmonary, genito-urinary), antispasmodic, astringent, diuretic, circulatory stimulant, emmenagoguic, expectorant, insecticidal, sedative.
Aromatherapeutic Uses
Acne, oily skin and hair, dandruff, eczema, psoriasis, arthritis, rheumatism, bronchitis, catarrh, coughs, sinusitis, cystitis, loss of menstruation outside pregnancy, premenstrual syndrome, stress-related disorders.
Blends Well With
Bergamot, clary sage, cypress, juniper berry, frankincense, neroli, petitgrain, rose, jasmine, oakmoss, rosemary, sandalwood, vetiver, ylang ylang.
