A tropical tree which can reach a height of about 100 feet (30 m). The branches are gracefully arched like the weeping willow, bearing large, oval shiny leaves and an abundance of intensely fragrant yellow blooms which appear constantly. Ylang ylang is native to tropical Asia, though most of the oil is produced in Madagascar, Reunion and the Comoros Islands.
Extraction Method
Steam distillation of the flowers. There are several grades of the oil: ylang ylang extra, and ylang ylang one, two and three. There is also a 'complete' oil. Most aromatherapists favour the 'extra' grade which is collected from the first running of the distillation process: the plant material is distilled two or three more times to obtain the subsequent grades. The 'complete' oil is supposedly the unfractionated product which is collected at the end of an uninterrupted distillation. Often, however, it is a reconstructed product comprising the less expensive ylang ylang fractions one, two and three.
Nature of the Oil
A pale yellow liquid. The aroma is intensely sweet and floral, reminiscent of almonds and jasmine combined. The odour effect is warming and intoxicating; a reputed aphrodisiac.
Other florals, black pepper, citrus essences, frankincense, geranium, vetiver.
