Amino Acids are the "building blocks" that make up protein. It is protein that provides the structure for all living things. Proteins are an essential part of every living cell. Each protein in the body is tailored for a specific need. In the human body, proteins are important to muscles, ligaments, tendons, organs, glands, nails, hair, body fluids, enzymes, hormones and the growth of bones.
Some Amino Acids act as neurotransmitters or precursors of neurotransmitters (chemicals that carry information from one nerve cell to another.) Therefore, certain amino acids are necessary for the brain to receive and send messages. Amino Acids also enable vitamins and minerals to perform their tasks effectively. Although vitamins and minerals are absorbed and assimilated by the body, they remain ineffective unless the necessary Amino Acids are present.
There are two types of Amino Acids, ESSENTIAL AMINO ACIDS - those that cannot he manufactured by the body itself and must be obtained from the diet and NON-ESSENTIAL AMINO ACIDS - those that can be produced by the body.
Twenty-two Amino Acids are required to make human protein; of these, nine are ESSENTIAL AMINO ACIDS. These include histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan and valine. If the diet is not properly balanced, that is, if it fails to supply adequate amounts of the essential Amino Acids, physical disorders will eventually develop.
