Beta Carotene - The major Vitamin A precursor found in plant foods is an effective anti-oxidant which is important in maintaining normal night vision, healthy skin and resistance to infection. The consumption of caffeine, alcohol and tobacco increases the body's need for Beta Carotene.
Vitamin C - This water soluble substance is considered the most important anti-oxidant in extra cellular fluid. It is also necessary for hydroxylation reactions involved in the synthesis of collagen and other important biochemical reactions.
Vitamin E - Is a major lipid-soluble anti-oxidant found in all cellular membranes, which protects red blood cells, cellular respiration and inhibits coagulation of the blood. It also protects the polyunsaturated fatty acid in blood lipoprotein against peroxidation.
Selenium - Like all other minerals is essential for good health and must be supplied through the diet. It works together with Vitamin E and preserves tissue elasticity. Selenium is a component of the protective enzymes defense.
Beta Carotene is a Provitamin of Vitamin A, found in green and yellow vegatables and carrots. Vitamins A & D are fat soluble vitamins which are stored by the body, transported by lipids and utilized by the body when the physiological need is present.
Vitamin A occurs naturally in two forms, preformed vitamin A and pro vitamin A or Beta Carotene.
It enhances immunity, prevents night blindness and is useful in skin disorders, such as acne. Vitamin A is important in the formation of bones and teeth, aids in fat storage and protects against colds and infections. Vitamin A acts as an anti-oxidant which helps against free radical damage and other diseases. Carotenoids, e.g. beta-carotene are a class of compounds related to vitamin A and act as anti-oxidants. Beta-carotene is converted to vitamin A in the liver.
