Devil's Claw (Harpagophytum procumbens) is a rugged plant belonging to the family of the pedaliaceae. It appears all over Southern Africa, especially in Transvaal, Oranje free State & S.W. Africa. After the firstrain young shoots come up out the roots, which crawling along the ground, reach a length of about 1.5 meters. On the shoulders of its leaves sit beaming red blossoms. The plant derives its name from the looks of its fruits with their wooden appearance and its hook-like outgrowth. The natives of South Africa have used this root for centuries in their folk medicine. Historical uses include treatment of arthritis, gout, rheumatism, inflammation, indigestion, elevated blood sugar, liver, gallbladder and kidney ailments.
